Check Any Page's OG Image and Link Preview Before You Share

To check an OG image, paste the page URL below and click Check OG image to see the exact og:image, title and description the page sends to Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Slack, rendered as the link card each platform will show. ScreenshotAPI.net loads the page in a real browser, measures it and flags anything missing, relative, undersized or badly cropped, free and with no signup.

Read the tags after
  • Reads og:*, twitter:* and fallback tags from the rendered DOM
  • Loads the og:image and measures its real pixel size
  • Captures a 1200 x 630 screenshot as a ready made fallback image

Your Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Slack previews will appear here, with every og: and twitter: tag one tab away.

Link preview

Open Graph Preview for Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Slack

The same og:image tag turns into four different cards. Each platform reads the tags in its own order, crops to its own ratio and caches the result on its own schedule. The OG preview above renders all four from one fetch, so you can see the crop and the fallback each network would use before the link goes out.

OG tag checker

What the OG Image Checker Tests on Every URL

An OG checker that only prints the tags leaves the hard part to you. This one also fetches the image, measures it and compares every value to what the platforms expect. Three steps in, eleven checks out, grouped below.

  1. Step 1

    Paste the page URL

Any public page: a blog post, a product page, a landing page or your homepage. ScreenshotAPI.net opens it in a real browser.

  2. Step 2

Pick when to read the tags

Page load works for server rendered sites. Choose Network idle for React, Vue or Angular apps that write their meta tags with JavaScript.

  3. Step 3

Read the previews and the report

See the Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Slack cards, every og: and twitter: tag, and a pass, warning or missing verdict for each check.

og-report.txt11 checks
  • 01passog:image is setWithout it, platforms pick a random image from the page or show nothing.
  • 02passAbsolute HTTPS URLRelative paths and http URLs are the most common reason a card has no image.
  • 03failImage loadsThe checker fetches the file. A 404, a redirect to HTML or a hotlink block all fail here.
  • 04warnAt least 1200 x 630 pxSmaller files get a thumbnail layout on Facebook and LinkedIn instead of the large card.
  • 05passAspect ratio 1.91:1Anything else is cropped. Square images lose their left and right edges.
  • 06warnog:image:width and heightDeclared sizes let Facebook render the big card on the first share instead of the second.
  • 07passog:title under 60 charactersLonger titles are cut mid word on Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • 08passog:description under 160 charactersCards show about two lines. The rest is dropped.
  • 09warnog:url, og:type, twitter:cardMissing twitter:card pushes X to the small summary layout even when the image is perfect.

Verdicts above are examples. The report you get is built from the live page and the live image file.

OG image size

Recommended OG Image Size and Dimensions

The best OG image size is 1200 x 630 pixels at a 1.91:1 ratio. One file at that size works everywhere, as long as the subject survives the crops marked below. The dimensions check above reports the real pixel size of your file, not the size declared in the tag.

  1. 1

1200 x 630 px artboard. One export at this size covers Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and the large X card.

  2. 2

5 percent safe zone. Platforms trim the outer edge first, so keep titles and logos inside the dashed line.

  3. 3

Square crop. The X summary card and WhatsApp cut a centred 630 x 630 square. Put the subject in the middle.

  4. 4

Under 1 MB. Crawlers give up on slow files. A JPG or PNG under 1 MB loads before the timeout.

How to Add the og:image Meta Tag

Paste this block inside the head of every page, swap the values and run the checker again. Eleven tags cover Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp. Click any line, or any part of the card, to see which tag controls which part of the preview.

og:imageThe image itself

Read byFacebookXLinkedInSlackWhatsApp

Use the full https:// URL. Crawlers do not resolve relative paths the way browsers do, and a relative og:image is the single most common reason a preview shows no picture.

Changed the tags? Run the checker again to confirm the fix before you share.

Open Graph debugger

Why Your OG Image Is Not Showing

A social crawler takes six steps between your page and the link card, and each step has one way to fail. Find the card that looks like yours, apply the fix for that step, then run the open graph debugger above again to confirm.

  1. 01Fetch raw HTML
  2. 02Follow og:url
  3. 03Resolve og:image
  4. 04Download the file
  5. 05Measure it
  6. 06Cache the card
  1. og:image = null
    yoursite.com
    <script>
    01 / Fetch raw HTML

Tags look right in the browser, card is empty

    Cause Tags written by JavaScript

Fix Facebook, X and LinkedIn read the raw HTML and never run scripts. The checker reads the rendered DOM so it finds them, the platforms will not. Render og: tags server side or at build time.

  2. other-site.com/home
    302
    02 / Follow og:url

Wrong page or a redirect page is previewed

    Cause og:url points somewhere else

Fix Platforms follow og:url and scrape that page instead of the one you shared. Make it match the canonical URL of the page the tags sit on.

  3. /images/og.png
    yoursite.com
    03 / Resolve og:image

Card has a title but no image

    Cause Relative or http:// URL

Fix og:image must be an absolute https:// URL. The checker flags /images/og.png and http:// values as failures.

  4. 403
    cdn.yoursite.com
    04 / Download the file

Image opens in the browser, not in the card

    Cause Crawler blocked

Fix robots.txt, a WAF rule, a login wall or hotlink protection stops the crawler. Allow facebookexternalhit, Twitterbot, LinkedInBot and Slackbot, and serve the image from a public CDN.

  5. 400 x 300
    yoursite.com
    05 / Measure it

Small thumbnail instead of the big card

Cause Undersized or no declared dimensions

Fix Export at 1200 x 630 and declare og:image:width and og:image:height. Facebook shows a thumbnail the first time it sees an image with no declared size.

  6. cached 9d agoog.png?v=1
    yoursite.com
    06 / Cache the card

Old image keeps showing after you changed it

    Cause Platform cache

Fix Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack keep the first scrape. Change the og:image file name or add a version query string, then re-scrape in the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector.

No og:image at all? ScreenshotAPI.net can make one from the page itself. The Open Graph Image API captures any URL at 1200 x 630, or renders a branded HTML template with the post title, and the Fallback tab in the checker shows what that capture looks like for the page you just tested.

Open Graph Checker vs Platform Debuggers

The Facebook Sharing Debugger, X Card Validator and LinkedIn Post Inspector each show one platform's card and refresh that platform's cache. Use them after a fix. Use this link preview checker first to find the fix.

Check OG Images in Bulk with the ScreenshotAPI.net API

Auditing a whole site, or checking tags in CI? Request each URL with extract_html=true and output=json. The response carries an extracted_html URL with the rendered DOM, so your script can parse og:image, og:title and twitter:card the same way this page does, and a screenshot of the same render. Add width=1200 and height=630 and that screenshot is a ready made fallback OG image.

extract_html
true returns the rendered DOM as an extracted_html URL in the JSON response. Parse the head for og: and twitter: tags.
output
Must be json. Extraction is not available with image or scrolling screenshot output modes.
width / height
Set 1200 and 630 so the screenshot that comes back is sized for og:image. Use it as a fallback for pages with no image.
custom_html
Render a branded HTML template instead of a URL to generate OG images with the post title baked in.
POSThttps://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot
# The API answers with JSON, for example:
# { "screenshot": "https://.../page.png", "extracted_html": "https://.../page.html" }
curl -X POST "https://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \

# Then download the rendered HTML file from the "extracted_html" URL
